This 44"x36" wall chart provides an overview of the events surrounding the 21 Sep. 2013 attack on Westgate mall in Nairobi, Kenya. It includes both link analysis and timeline events. It illustrates the operational and personal connections between individuals from al-Shabaab who participated in the planning of and execution of the attack.
The left portion of the chart focuses on the attack itself. It shows a layout of Westgate mall with relevant floors and locations. It also identifies the four attackers and the methods they used to enter the mall, including still photographs taken from CCTV footage of the attackers from within the mall. The top portion of the chart identifies individuals arrested in connection to the attack and individuals currently on trial in Kenya. The right portion of the chart focuses on the links between al-Qaeda and al-Shabaab in relation to the attack. The bottom portion of the chart focuses on significant statements released by al-Shabaab senior leaders and identifies the individuals and their corresponding nationalities that al-Shabaab claimed participated in the attack. Along the bottom of the chart a timeline is shown starting from 1130 local time on 21 Sep. 2013 to 30 Oct. 2013 when Kenyan Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku announced the final death toll of 67 persons.
Yellow lines indicate connections to the attack, red lines indicate affiliates and operational relationships, green lines indicate an individual's nationality and blue lines indicate personal relationships between individuals.
